SOUTH MILAN AGRICULTURAL PARK

“In situ” Enhanced Bioremediation technologies applied to a site contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons

Hydrocarbon spillage, as a result of a malicious event, caused contamination of soils up to about 2.5m from p.c. (heavy hydrocarbon concentrations up to 10,000 mg/kg). Based on the microbiological investigations conducted during the characterization phase, 3 pilot tests were conducted to treat soils using “in situ” Enhanced Bioremediation technologies.

PROBLEM

Agricultural land impacted by hydrocarbon spillage

Hydrocarbon spillage, as a result of a malicious event, caused contamination of an area of approx. 12,000 m2 in an agricultural context, involving both surface soils (0-1 m from w.p.) and deep soils (1-3 m from w.p.), with heavy hydrocarbon concentrations up to 10,000 mg/kg.

SOLUTION

Pilot tests of ”Enhanced Bioremediation”

For deep soils in areas with less hydrocarbon concentration than 5,000 mg/kg, based on the characterization results, specific pilot tests were defined to test 3 different biological remediation strategies: 1) in-situ injection of sulfate-releasing mixtures (SBC) 2) in-situ injection of oxygen-releasing mixtures (ORC) 3) on-site treatment with ORC coupled with the addition of green composted soil improver (compost).

OBJECTIVES ACHIEVED

The pilot test conducted allowed to evaluate the influence of different remediation strategies on the bacterial community involved in the biodegradation of contaminates and to select, based on the microbiological and chemical results, the most effective strategy.
