SOUTH MILAN AGRICULTURAL PARK
Phytoremediation of a petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated site
Hydrocarbon spillage, as a result of a malicious event, resulted in the contamination of soil matrix in an agricultural setting. Based on the results of the chemical, pedological and microbiological characterization of the site, a phytoremediation strategy was selected to restore surface soils using oilseed herbaceous species.

PROBLEM
Agricultural land subject to hydrocarbon spillage
Hydrocarbon spill, as a result of a malicious event, caused contamination of an area of approx. 12,000 m2 in an agricultural context (heavy hydrocarbon concentrations up to 10,000 mg/kg).
APPLIED TECHNOLOGY: phytoremediation
TYPE OF POLLUTANT: petroleum hydrocarbons
CONTEXT: Hydrocarbon spill in an agricultural context
SOLUTION
Phytoremediation for surface soil restoration
Based on the results of chemical, pedological and microbiological characterization of the site, a phytoremediation strategy was selected for the restoration of surface soils, which involves the use of herbaceous oilseed species that can afterwards be used as biomass for biofuel production.
